"E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" is a science fiction film released in 1985. The movie starts in a forest with a host of alien botanists collecting samples. Suddenly, government agents burst onto the scene, and all but one of the aliens escape to their spaceship. The scene then shifts to Elliot, a ten-year old boy, who is out running errands. When Elliot sees the shy alien, it becomes frightened and runs away. Elliot tells his mother, sister, and brother, Michael, about the encounter, but they do not believe him. Eventually, Elliot coaxes the alien into his home with candy. |
There is a brief feeling-out period, but the family befriends the alien. Elliot even begins to have a psychic connection with the alien, whom he names E.T. For instance, one day at school, Elliott exhibits signs of intoxication when E.T. drinks beer. |
When E.T. becomes homesick, he and Elliot build a communications device so E.T. can contact his spaceship. Soon afterward, E.T.'s health begins to fail, as he cannot tolerate prolonged exposure to the earth's atmosphere. When Elliot wakes up the next morning, E.T. is missing, and Michael finds E.T. dying in the forest. Elliot also appears to be ill and dying. About this time, government agents find the family and E.T. They quarantine the house, and E.T. appears to die, while the psychic connection is broken and Elliot improves. Elliot is left alone with E.T., who reanimates and asks Elliot to take him to the forest where he can reunite with his people. Michael steals a van that E.T. had been loaded into, and a chase ensues. E.T. and the family get away and say their good-byes. The movie ends with E.T. saying, "I'll be right here," as he points his glowing finger at Elliot's heart. The spaceship takes off, leaving a rainbow across the sky. |
