Top 10 American Movies - Gone with the Wind |
"Gone with the Wind" is a 1939 movie that depicts the South during the Civil War and through the Reconstruction era. The film was adopted from Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer-Prize winning novel of the same name. The director was Victor Fleming, and Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland, and Hattie McDaniel were the stars. |
The movie begins on a large cotton plantation called Tara in rural Georgia. It is 1861, on the eve of the American Civil War. The movie gives us some insight into how the southern aristocracy viewed the Civil War and the ensuing Reconstruction. |
The story centers on Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) and her struggles to find true love while maintaining her way of life and her beloved plantation. Scarlett chases the meek Ashley Wilkes, who is engaged to her cousin, but Ashley tells her he's more compatible with her cousin. To make Ashley jealous, she marries his brother, who soon dies in the Civil War. |
After a series of failed relationships, Scarlett marries the dashing Rhett Butler for his money, and they have a tumultuous relationship. Finally, Scarlett realizes she really loves Rhett. Unfortunately, her realization comes too late. Her chasing after Ashley has pushed Rhett away. As Rhett leaves, Scarlett asks if he leaves, "where shall I go and what shall I do?" Rhett replies with the famous line, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." |
As the movie ends, we see Scarlett's face brighten. She says, "Tara! Home. I'll go home, and I'll think of some way to get him back! After all, tomorrow is another day!" |
