Top 10 American Movies - Jaws
"Jaws" was a 1975 film based on a novel by Peter Benchley. The story starts on a summer night on Amity Island in New England when a young woman goes for a swim in the ocean. The woman is dragged under the water and disappears. The police chief, Martin Brody, is notified of the girl's disappearance. Later, the body is found, and the medical examiner tells Brody that her death was due to a shark attack.
Brody decides to close the beaches until the shark problem is resolved, but the mayor overrules him. The mayor does not want to damage the tourist business. A short time later, the shark attacks and kills a boy. The boy's mother places a $3,000 bounty on the shark that attracts a local shark hunter named Quint. Brody brings in a marine biologist, Matt Hooper, who examines the girl's body and also concludes she was killed by a large shark.
The three leave on Quint's boat to find the killer shark. While throwing out bait behind the boat, Brody is frightened when an enormous shark rises out of the water. Once Brody calms himself, he tells Quint, "You're going to need a bigger boat." The shark then circles the boat, as if the fishermen were his prey. Quint eventually harpoons the shark and uses every trick he knows to try to kill it. He seems to have a personal vendetta against the shark. However, the powerful shark survives and eventually swamps the boat, killing Quint in the process. When the shark attacks Brody, he fends it off with a tank of compressed oxygen. The shark swims away with the tank in his mouth. When the shark returns, Brody shoots the tank with a rifle, blowing up the shark. The movie ends with a relieved Brody and Hooper swimming toward shore.
