Both the state of New York and the city of New York were named for the seventeenth century Duke of York, James Stuart. This area was originally inhabited by the Native American tribes of Algonquian, Iroquois, and Lenape. It was claimed by Henry Hudson in 1609 for Dutch settlers, and they formed the colony of New Netherland, which was taken over by the British in 1664. About a third of the Revolutionary War battles took place in this state. In 1788, New York became the eleventh U.S. state.
Tourist attractions in New York include Ellis Island, the main facility for immigrants entering the United States who arrived between 1892 and 1954. The Statue of Liberty is located in New York and was given to the United States as a gift from France to celebrate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. Niagara Falls is another popular tourist destination, along with New York City.
