Top US 10 Cities and Regions - Denver
The city of Denver, Colorado is located just east of the Rocky Mountains. Denver has the highest population of any city in Colorado and is also the state capital. This area experiences four seasons, with summers generally hot and dry and winters cool, with frequent periods of snow that last from October to April.
Denver encompasses a total of 154.9 square miles, of which 1.6 square miles are water. This city is made up of seventy-nine official neighborhoods. The elevation is 5,280 feet (1 mile) above sea level, which gives Denver the nickname of the "Mile-High City."
According to the 2010 census, the population of Denver was 600,158.
What is now the city of Denver originally consisted of three separate towns with separate names settled during the Gold Rush era. In 1859, the three cities combined and took the name of Denver, after the then Kansas Territorial Governor James Denver. Denver is one of the few cities in the United States founded in an area where there was not an existing road, railroad, or a navigable body of water—this area was settled because gold was discovered here.
Denver is one of only a few U.S. cities with more than four professional teams from some of the most popular American sports. Denver is home to the Denver Broncos (football), Colorado Avalanche (hockey), Denver Nuggets (basketball), Colorado Rapids (soccer), and the Denver Outlaws (lacrosse).
