Keith: Hi, I’m Keith. |
Sadia: Hey, and I’m Sadia. The focus of this lesson is texting and |
multimedia messaging-- |
Keith: It’s called: SMS and also MMS! |
Sadia: You may have seen these acronyms before-- |
Keith: Acronym? What’s that? |
Sadia: An acronym is a word formed from the first |
letters of the words in the name-- so, SMS and MMS are |
acronyms. SMS stands for "SHORT MESSAGE |
SERVICE." SHORT starts with an S, MESSAGE |
starts with an M, and SERVICE starts with an S. |
SMS. |
Keith: So, probably MMS... that’s an acronym, too. And what that stands for is "MULTIMEDIA |
MESSAGE SERVICE." MMS. |
Sadia: Both SMS and MMS are types of messages |
that can be sent or received using a mobile phone. |
Keith: And, you may already know that the more popular of the two is SMS. |
Sadia: Yeah, SMS messages-- commonly referred to as "text |
messages"-- are the short, text-based messages you |
may send to a friend, maybe, updating her on where you are-- |
Keith: Or maybe what you did, what time you'll meet-- |
Sadia: So, any information that is best |
conveyed in short form. |
Keith: Yeah, and actually, some people they don’t even call each other, they just communicate exclusively via SMS-- |
Sadia: It’s a little weird, but it’s true! Some people prefer the |
silent task of typing into a phone keypad to, you know, picking up the phone and calling someone. |
Keith: Yeah, I guess so. |
Sadia; I mean, I guess it’s smart if making noise is not an |
option. |
Keith: Yeah, maybe in a meeting or something. |
Sadia: Ah, that’s true. |
Keith: And SMS has given us some new words and phrases to |
use though, right? |
Sadia: Oh, definitely! The word "text, " which used to |
refer to words printed on a page, has become a verb. |
As in, "I'll text you when I'm on my way to pick you |
up." |
Keith:I’ll text you when the game finishes. |
Sadia: Let's also talk briefly about MMS. |
Keith: You probably remember, refers to |
sound, video and photos. |
Sadia: MMS technology allows multiple kinds of media to |
be included or sent with standard text message |
Keith: SMS, right. But, because it has advanced technological requirements |
that may not be met by some phones, MMS |
is not nearly as popular as SMS. |
Sadia: Listeners, do you use your mobile phone to send texts? |
Sadia: Let's take a look at some of the vocabulary for this Buzzwords lesson. |
