Keith: Hi, I’m Keith. |
Sadia: Hey, and I’m Sadia. |
Keith: The focus of this lesson is e-commerce, which means shopping online. |
Sadia: Shopping... I love shopping... Sort of. |
Keith: Why? |
Said: I kind of like shopping online more than shopping in a store! |
Keith: Okay well, that’s perfect-- let's talk about it. |
Sadia: Okay, let's. Online shopping (e-commerce) probably first got popular sometime in the late 90s. |
Keith: Yeah. But I don't know that people were so into it then though. |
Sadia: I think you're right about that. People didn't really want to give their credit card numbers and other sensitive information over the Internet. |
Keith: But today, it’s a totally different story! |
Sadia: Today, buying things online is about as common as sending an email! And I think e-commerce technology has been developed to the point where consumers can feel safe making purchases and companies can provide as much merchandise as their shipping departments can hold! |
Keith: Yeah, a lot of web-based stores began as "brick-and-mortar" stores and what that means is that’s a real store, while other stores only exist on the internet. |
Sadia: And a few of the major American e-commerce companies are Amazon.com, which started as "the world’s largest bookstore" and it has actually grown into America's largest online retailer-- you think of anything, you can probably buy it on Amazon. |
Keith: Not just books, you can buy clothes, video games, TVs, whatever you want. Some other popular e-commerce sites are Staples.com and that one, it sells the same office supplies as it |
does in the stores across the country. |
Sadia: That’s an example of a store that’s both virtual and a kind of a brick and mortar store. |
Keith: One more virtual store that we have is eBay.com and this one is actually a really popular auction website. |
Sadia: You may have heard of it. I was CRAZY with eBay years ago, when it was newer, seriously like in the late 90s. I bought everything you can imagine. I bought a scanner, I bought like shoes, clothes, books, posters. |
Keith: Well, the thing is, you can buy things really cheaply on eBay, because it’s other people selling it to you, not stores selling it to you. But now, there’s a lot of stores on eBay though. |
Sadia: Online shopping is a great alternative-- I think!-- to going to a retail store. You have an amazing array of choices, you can shop when you want, for as long as you want. |
Keith: There are some disadvantages that you may have with e-Commerce. There’s, for one, TOO many choices, there are so many things you can choose from. Also, you have to pay for shipping. And one more thing, you can't preview or try on the merchandise, and you also have to wait for your purchase to come to your door. |
Sadia: Another point is that buying things online does require the use of a credit or debit card, and a debit card that is issued to you by your bank but functions like a credit card. |
Keith: That's right. But in America, both of these cards, credit cards and debit cards, they’re really common. But in other countries, I don’t know, that might not be the case, but it can also be the case as well? |
Sadia: I think it varies. Here, it’s very, very common, but not everywhere. Listeners, do you use credit cards in your country? |
Keith: And if you do, do you do any online shopping? |
Keith: Let's take a look at some of the vocabulary for this Buzzwords lesson. |
