Okay, let's get started. |
First is tuna, tuna, tuna. |
Tuna. |
Tuna is a super, super popular fish. |
Some people eat tuna as sashimi, so as a part of sushi. |
Some people in some cultures use it in tins, like you can get tins of tuna as well to put on sandwiches and things. |
So it depends a lot on the country and the culture, but it's a very common fish. |
Here's an example. |
Tuna is found in warm ocean waters all around the world. |
Ladle. |
A ladle is a kitchen utensil. |
It's like a really, really deep spoon that has a handle, a long handle on the end, and we can use it to scoop liquid. |
So it's used a lot with things like soups and stews and other liquids. |
Here's an example. |
A ladle is needed to serve fruit punch from the bowl. |
Toothpick. |
A toothpick is a small piece of wood about this size. |
It's very long and thin, and it has a sharp side. |
One end is very, very sharp. |
We use it to pick our teeth after a meal. |
So toothpick is the name of this object, and it's also what we use it to do, to pick at our teeth. |
Here's an example. |
You can test to see if a cake is done baking using a toothpick. |
Dish. |
A dish is one part of the kinds of things that we use to serve food. |
So when we say dish, we often mean a plate or perhaps a bowl. |
But dish can refer to all of these kinds of objects, big dishes and very small dishes like sauce dishes. |
Here's an example. |
I put away the dishes. |
Cup. |
A cup is one type of dish.A cup is something that we use to drink things. |
This might have a handle on it. It might not have a handle on it. We use the word cup for both of these. |
Here's an example. |
Would you like a cup of tea? |
Drinking glass. |
A drinking glass tends to be something that's a bit tall and that's easy to hold with one hand. |
It's something that we use for drinking water or juice, something that we might want to have a lot of at one time. |
Here's an example. |
The drinking glass is full of water. |
Coffee mug. |
A coffee mug is like a really thick cup that has a handle on the side. |
So we can put other things inside a coffee mug like tea or hot chocolate. |
But a key point is that this is a very thick cup like to protect the hand from the heat inside. |
It makes it easier to hold with the handle on the side of it. |
Here's an example. |
Drinks stay hot longer in a good coffee mug. |
Tea cup. |
A tea cup is usually a small kind of thin cup that we use primarily for drinking tea. |
These usually also have a handle on the side so that it's easier to drink this very hot beverage. |
But also tea cups often have very intricate detailed kinds of paintings and other decorations on them. |
Here's an example. |
Tea cup and saucer. |
Pitcher. |
A pitcher is like a really, really large glass that has a handle on it. |
So when we have a pitcher of something, we have a pitcher this amount of a drink. |
So we might get a pitcher of water when we go to a restaurant that everyone can share. |
We might have a pitcher of something like fruit punch at a party or it might be a pitcher of beer if we're at a restaurant where everybody is drinking. |
We can use pitchers to share our drink. |
Here's an example. |
In the summer, a pitcher of iced tea is always on my table. |
Tea pot. |
A tea pot can have a couple of different meanings. A tea pot could mean the thing that we use to boil water and that we can then pour the boiling water from into our tea cup. |
You might also see tea pots that have a filter inside. |
So you can put tea leaves into it and add the boiling water to the same sort of receptacle and then pour that into your tea cup. |
So depending on the tea pot that you have, it might have a filter in it for adding leaves and other tea-making ingredients, or it might not. |
Here's an example. |
A tea pot is a great place to boil water. |
