| Yu: Hey! Where've you been? It's been more than an hour since I placed the order. |
| Delivery Guy: I'm really sorry sir. Traffic was horrible. |
| Yu: What do you mean traffic? You rode a bicycle here! I saw you from my window. |
| Delivery Guy: Uhhh... Well, you see, I got stuck in traffic because, uhhh...it was raining when I left the store, and…and I had to ride carefully. |
| Yu: It hasn't rained at all day today. That's a flat-out lie! |
| Delivery Guy: Well, uh, I also got hit by a car and fell. I had to talk to the police. |
| Yu: You got hit by a car and fell? Well, your pants aren't ripped, and the pizza looks okay. I think you're lying again. |
| Delivery Guy: Oh, no, sir. I would never lie. You see, I've got great reflexes, and I saved your pizza even as I was thrown to the ground. |

| Delivery Guy: Well, anyway, I'm here, safe and sound. So here's your pizza. |

| Daniel: Well, as you can see from the dialogue, pizza being delivered to the house is expected to be there within a certain amount of time. |
| Chihiro: Right, and that time is usually estimated by the initial conversation on the phone, and if it doesn't arrive during that time, some customers can get pretty angry. |
| Daniel: Yeah. Time is important in the States and lateness is frowned upon in many cases. The person in the dialogue was especially unhappy. He refused to take and pay for the pizza. |

| Chihiro: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Daniel: The first phrase we’ll look at is, “That’s a flat-out lie.” This phrase means that it's an obvious lie. The word “flat-out” means “clear,” and can be used when you want to make a statement more forceful, as the customer did in the dialogue. Another example is, |
| Chihiro: “The manager told him flat-out that the report was not good enough.” |
| Daniel: This sentence means that the manager stated very clearly, without a doubt, that the report was not good. |
| Chihiro: Okay, the second phrase we'll look at is, “You’ll have to learn your lesson the hard way.” This means to learn a lesson through a tough or bad experience. In the dialogue, instead of the customer letting the delivery guy go with just a warning, he's going to be hard on him and call his boss. This way the delivery guy will learn not to be late through a bad experience. Another example is if somebody says, |
| Daniel: “She learned not to do drugs the hard way.” |
| Chihiro: It means that the person has had a bad experience with drugs and has now decided not to do them. |
| Daniel: Okay, let’s take a look at the grammar for this lesson. |

| Daniel: When there was something important in the past that someone did not do, then they should have done it. Also, if someone does something wrong, then they should not have done it. To form the perfect modal using “should,” add the perfect tense after “should.” |
| Chihiro: In other words, when forming a positive sentence, it's subject + “should” + perfect tense. The perfect tense is have + past participle. An example of this from the dialogue is, “You should've thought about that before you left.” |
| Daniel: And a negative sentence is subject + “should” + not + perfect tense as in this sentence, “I shouldn't have forgotten your birthday.” |
| Chihiro: Another thing to know is that questions do not begin with “have” with modals. For example, “Should I have gone there?” is never, “Have I should gone there?” |
| Daniel: And negatives do not use the word “do” with modals. For example, “You shouldn't have waited” is never, “You didn't should have waited.” |
