In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to directions that will help you find the place you are looking for. Previously we introduced, is there a [place] near here? But while we can now ask, we haven't addressed understanding the answer. In this lesson, we're going to work on understanding what someone tells us. We'll go over the basic directions. First, we have go straight. |
Go straight is a command, but when giving directions it's normal to use even to people you don't know. Let's hear it once again - Go straight. First, we have go, which implies, (you) go and the word straight. Go straight. |
Let's look at the next expression to help us turn. Let's cover turn right. Let's say it againly slowly - Turn right. The first word turn is the verb in command form. We follow this with right the direction. So all together we have - turn right. If we have right, we're going to have a left. Same verb, turn different direction left. So all together we have - turn left. Okay, now let's take a look at the sentence turn right at the traffic light. |
After turn right which we have just seen, you have at the traffic light. Let's break it down and hear it one more time - turn right at the traffic light. First you have turn right which is what we just learned. Then we have the preposition at which is followed by the traffic light. |
If you want to say which side the building is on, then say it's on the right side. It's indicates the thing or location you're looking for. On is the preposition, and the right side is the side it's on. If it's on the other side, then you would say, it's on the left side. |
Okay, now to close out today's lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll say the phrase or sentence, and why don't you try saying it out loud? Good luck everybody! |
- Go straight |
- Turn right |
- Turn right at the traffic light. |
- It's on the right side. |
All right, that's going to do it for today! See you all soon! |
