In the previous lesson, we covered how to ask, “How do you say this in English?” Do you remember? Today, because we don't want you to be caught off guard in any kind of situation in the States, we are going to introduce you to a new phrase that is very important to help you focus your skills, not on the sounds, but on the writing. So let's start this new lesson. |
You can request this by asking, “Can you write it down please?” Again, we have “can you” for a request. Then we have the action requested, “write it down”, and then finally, “please” for politeness. So, once again, that's “Can you write it down please?” If you request this, make sure you have a pen and paper ready. |
Once you have the written words, you may find that you have no idea how to pronounce them. You might ask, “How do you pronounce this?” You can say this while pointing at the word. Let's break down that word - pro-nounce. Once again, pronounce. So, the question is, “How do you pronounce this?” |
If you just don’t have a pen and paper ready, you can ask for them. Try this phrase - “Do you have a pen and paper?” It’s a question, so we start with “Do you have” and then we make our request, “a pen and paper”. So, altogether we have “Do you have a pen and paper?” If you’re at a restaurant, you can just write on the back of a paper napkin. |
Okay, now to close out today's lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll say the phrase or sentence, and why don't you try saying it out loud? Good luck everybody! |
- Can you write it down please? |
- How do you pronounce this? |
- Do you have a pen and paper? |
All right, that's going to do it for today! See you all soon! |
