INTRODUCTION |
British Restaurant, Part 5: Cheque Please! |
In the last lesson we took a look at how to order at restaurants. In this lesson, we’ll cover the language needed while enjoying your mouth-watering food, and the phrases for the end of your meal. |
SURVIVAL PHRASES |
At most restaurants in the UK, it’s likely that the waiter or waitress will ask if you’re enjoying your meal. They may say: “Is everything okay?” If your mouth is full, you can just nod and mumble, ‘thanks’. |
Once you’ve finished eating and you’re ready to leave, you can ask for the cheque. In this case, you would say: “Excuse me, could I have the cheque, please?” Again, we use ‘excuse me’ to get the attention of the waiter or waitress, followed by the polite request ‘could I have’ for the item you want, which is ‘the cheque. Finally, we add ‘please’ to the end to make the request even politer. |
Slowly: Excuse me, could I have the cheque please? |
Okay, to close out this lesson we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So good luck! |
- Is everything okay? |
- Excuse me, could I have the cheque please? |
