| In this lesson, we’ll cover an extremely important phrase: “Where is the toilet?” |
| SURVIVAL PHRASES |
| In English, we say: ‘Where is the toilet?’ Let’s break it down. ‘Where’ is a question starter to ask for the location, ‘is’ is the verb, and ‘the toilet’ is the place you’re asking for. |
| Slowly, by syllable: Where is the toilet? |
| Don't forget that intonation is important here. The intonation should dip and then end in an upward tone. |
| Otherwise it won't sound like a question. |
| Now, you would want to add the phrase ‘excuse me’ in front of any question you ask a person that you don’t know. |

| This makes the question sound politer and means the person will respond nicely. If you’re impolite, then the person you ask will most likely be impolite as well! |
| Toilet signs tend to be the same all over the UK. The men’s toilets will feature a sign of a person dressed in trousers, while the women’s toilets will feature a sign of a person in a dress. If you can’t see the signs, then look out for the words ‘men’ or ‘women’, which are also commonly used. Many facilities also have a toilet for wheelchair access. These toilets have much more space, but you shouldn't use them unless you physically find the regular toilets difficult to use. |
| When travelling, the best place to use a toilet would be a nearby department store or supermarket. These toilets are clean and open to everybody. However, if there are no department stores or supermarkets nearby, a local cafe might be your best option. In such cases, the toilets are usually for customers only, therefore you would most likely have to buy something small. You may also need to ask for the key sometimes. |
| In other cases, you might find portable or public toilets in towns and cities. These aren’t always the cleanest, but they can still be used. Be warned that it’s illegal to urinate outside in the UK, and if the police see you, you could be arrested. |
