INTRODUCTION
How to Say "I Don't Understand" in English
In this lesson, we’ll take a look at another important phrase: “I don’t understand.” This will prove very useful if you don’t immediately understand what people are saying.
SURVIVAL PHRASES
Let’s break this phrase down: ’I’ is the person, in this case, yourself, ‘don’t’ is a contraction of do+not, and finally we have ‘understand’. Altogether it is, “I don’t understand.”
Slowly by syllable: I don’t understand.
Another way to express that you don’t understand is by asking somebody: “What does this mean?”
Slowly by syllable: What does this mean?
This phrase could come in handy for many situations, so it’s a good one to remember. For example, if you get fined for having the wrong train ticket, you could say to the train staff: “I don’t understand, what does this mean?” The chances that you get out of paying the fine are slim, but at least you’ve tried.
Okay, to close out this lesson we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So good luck!
- I don’t understand
- What does this mean?

Outro
