Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to discuss purpose in English?
Welcome to Three Step English Practice by EnglishClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to discuss purpose.
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
Back in China, I was studying to be a musician, but I gave up on that dream. Now I'm setting up an agency to represent American artists in China.
Is that so? When I open up my restaurant, I want a big stage to book live shows. Maybe you can help me with that?
Both of these characters express something they did, or want to do, to accomplish a goal.
The first does so by saying that they studied "to be" a musician. Then, she says she's setting up an agency "to represent" artists.
The second does this by saying they want a big stage "to book" live shows.
In both cases, the characters use "to," followed by a bare infinitive, to explain their purpose.
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson.
