Do you know how to discuss purpose in English? |
Welcome to Three Step English Practice by EnglishClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to discuss purpose. |
Let’s look at the main dialogue. |
Two people are having a conversation. |
Back in China, I was studying to be a musician, but I gave up on that dream. Now I'm setting up an agency to represent American artists in China. |
Is that so? When I open up my restaurant, I want a big stage to book live shows. Maybe you can help me with that? |
Both of these characters express something they did, or want to do, to accomplish a goal. |
The first does so by saying that they studied "to be" a musician. Then, she says she's setting up an agency "to represent" artists. |
The second does this by saying they want a big stage "to book" live shows. |
In both cases, the characters use "to," followed by a bare infinitive, to explain their purpose. |
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson. |
