“Where did you learn English?” in English
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Where did you learn English?”
Eric: Where did you learn English?
Becky: The first word in the question is
Eric: where
Becky: This is the question word used to inquire about location.
Eric: (Slow, by syllable) where
Becky: Listen again and repeat.
Eric: where
Becky: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is

Becky: It’s almost the same, just replace “at home” with “by myself.” Now say, “I learned it by myself.”

Becky: To expand on the pattern, replace “by myself” with “at university.”
Eric: at university
Becky: at university. “University” is a school for higher education after high school.
Eric: (slow) at university (regular) at university
Becky: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “at university.”
Eric: I learned it at university.
Becky: Again, just replace “by myself” with “at university.” Say “I learned it at university.”
Eric: I learned it at university.
Becky: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting the United States and someone asks you where you learned English. You learned English in school. How would you answer?
Eric: Where did you learn English? (five seconds) I learned it in school.
Becky: Now, imagine you learned it at home. Respond to the question.
Eric: Where did you learn English? (five seconds) I learned it at home.
Becky: Imagine you learned it by yourself. Answer the speaker's question.

Becky: Imagine you learned it at university. How would you answer?
